The Forbidden City is also called the Palace Museum. It was the imperial palace of 24 emperors from the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644) to the Qing Dynasty (1644–1912).

The palace was “forbidden” because regular people were not allowed to enter. Only high officials, royal family members, and workers lived and worked inside.

The Outer Court – Where Emperors Ruled

This area was used for ceremonies and government meetings.

  • Meridian Gate (Wu Men): The main entrance gate. It has five arches and tall towers. The emperor stood here to address his people.

  • Hall of Supreme Harmony (Taihe Dian): The biggest hall. Important events were held here, like the emperor’s birthday or new year ceremonies.

  • Hall of Central Harmony: A smaller hall for rest and preparation.

  • Hall of Preserving Harmony: Used for royal banquets and final civil service exams.

The Inner Court – Where the Royal Family Lived

This area was for private life, including the emperor, empress, and concubines.

  • Palace of Heavenly Purity (Qianqing Gong): The emperor’s main bedroom.

  • Hall of Union (Jiaotai Dian): Held royal seals and treasures.

  • Palace of Earthly Tranquility (Kunning Gong): The empress’s residence.

Imperial Garden

At the north end, this peaceful garden is full of ancient pine trees, stone paths, and small pavilions. It’s a great place to relax after a long walk.

Treasure Gallery and Clock Exhibition Hall

  • These are extra exhibition halls with royal jewelry, gold items, and ancient clocks.

  • Tickets are sold separately inside the palace.

Panoramic Views from Jingshan Park

  • Exit the Forbidden City through the north gate.

  • Cross the road to Jingshan Park, climb to the top of the hill, and enjoy a perfect full view of the Forbidden City.

How to Get There

The Forbidden City is located in the center of Beijing, next to Tiananmen Square. You need to get a subway card to take the subway,And it requires a transfer, which is a bit inconvenient.If you sign up for our tour group, we will provide a special vehicle to pick you up and drop you off.

  • Subway: Take Line 1 and get off at Tiananmen East or Tiananmen West.

  • Entrance: South Gate (Meridian Gate)
