This captivating 3-day tour of Shanghai and Watertown Wuzhen offers a perfect blend of urban sophistication and ancient charm. In Shanghai, you explore the world-class Shanghai Museum, home to an extensive collection of Chinese artifacts. The tranquil Yu Garden provides a serene escape with its classical Chinese architecture and landscaping. Jing’an Temple, a Buddhist oasis in the heart of the city, offers spiritual and architectural marvels. The journey then takes you to Wuzhen, a picturesque water town known for its well-preserved ancient buildings and intricate canal system. This tour seamlessly combines Shanghai’s modernity with Wuzhen’s timeless beauty, providing a rich cultural experience in eastern China.
The best time to visit Shanghai is during Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November). During these months, the weather is mild and pleasant, with comfortable temperatures and lower humidity, making it ideal for sightseeing and outdoor activities. Summer can be hot and humid, while winter can be chilly, so spring and autumn offer the most favorable conditions for travelers.
Shanghai's location makes it a perfect starting point for exploring more of eastern China. Here are some nearby destinations worth visiting:
Suzhou: Renowned for its classical gardens and canals, Suzhou is just 25-30 minutes away from Shanghai by high-speed train, with easy access via regular train or bus.
Hangzhou: Known for West Lake and its tea culture, Hangzhou is about 1 to 1.5 hours away by high-speed train.
Huangshan (Yellow Mountain): Although a bit farther (approximately 3-5 hours by high-speed train), Huangshan is a UNESCO World Heritage site famous for its stunning granite peaks, ancient pine trees, hot springs, and breathtaking views.
Nanjing: Once the capital of several Chinese dynasties, Nanjing is steeped in history and culture, located about 1.5 to 2 hours from Shanghai by high-speed train, making it a convenient trip.
Dongzha and Xizha are two distinct areas in Wuzhen, each offering unique experiences. Dongzha, or East Wuzhen, is characterized by its traditional charm, with preserved ancient architecture and a focus on cultural exhibitions, making it quieter and more authentic. In contrast, Xizha, or West Wuzhen, is more developed and tourist-friendly, featuring modern amenities, shops, and a lively atmosphere with events and nightlife. While Dongzha allows for a serene exploration of local crafts and history, Xizha provides a bustling environment with diverse dining and entertainment options.
