Just China Tours, Just For You!
As you plan your journey to Xi'an, the ancient capital of China and home to the world-famous Terracotta Army, Xi'an Xianyang International Airport (XIY) will likely be your first point of contact with this historically rich region. Let's explore what this modern airport has to offer and how it can enhance your travel experience.
Xi'an Xianyang International Airport, located in the outskirts of Xi'an City, Shaanxi province, is the largest airport in Northwest China and the second largest in Northern China. Covering an impressive area of 5 square kilometers (1.9 sq mi), it serves as a crucial hub for both domestic and international travel.
The airport's history dates back to 1991 when it first opened, replacing the older Xi'an Xiguan Airport. Since then, it has undergone significant expansions to keep up with the rapidly growing air traffic in northwestern China.
Terminal 3 is particularly impressive, capable of handling 22 million passengers annually - twice the combined capacity of Terminals 1 and 2. If you're flying with major airlines like China Eastern Airlines, China Southern Airlines, or Shanghai Airlines, you'll likely depart from this modern facility.
The airport features two runways, with the second one opened in 2012. At 3,800 meters long, this runway can accommodate even the largest commercial aircraft, including the Airbus A380.
Throughout the terminals, you'll find a range of services catering to travelers' needs:
Xi'an Xianyang International Airport offers a 144-hour visa-free transit policy for citizens of 53 countries. This allows eligible travelers to explore Xi'an and Xianyang for up to six days without obtaining a visa, provided they have onward travel booked to a third country.
Located opposite the international arrival exit, this center offers various services to help international visitors navigate payment options in China. Services include:
Consultation on mobile payment apps (Alipay, WeChat Pay, E-CNY)
ATM cash withdrawals
Currency exchange
Assistance with setting up mobile payments
Xi'an Xianyang International Airport serves as a hub for several airlines, including Joy Air and Hainan Airlines. It offers a wide range of domestic and international connections.
While the airport primarily serves domestic routes, it has been expanding its international offerings. Notably, Finnair launched the first intercontinental route from Xi'an to Helsinki in 2013, although this service has been suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic and airspace restrictions.
Xi'an Xianyang International Airport, located about 40km from Xi'an city center, offers an extensive network of shuttle bus services that provide convenient and economical transportation options for travelers. These shuttle buses connect the airport with various districts of Xi'an, major attractions, and even neighboring cities, making it an ideal choice for foreign tourists looking to explore this historic city and its surroundings.
Ticket Prices and Purchase
The standard ticket price for shuttle buses from Xi'an Xianyang International Airport to Xi'an city center is 25 CNY (approximately 3.5 USD) per person. This flat rate applies to most routes within the city. For buses to Xianyang city, the fare is slightly lower at 15 CNY (about 2 USD) per person.
Where to Purchase the Tickets for Shuttle Bus
It's advisable to have Chinese currency (CNY) ready for ticket purchases, as foreign currency or credit cards may not be accepted at all counters.
