Day 2: Explore Tiananmen Square, Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven

After breakfast, set off on a journey through Beijing’s fascinating history, beginning at Tiananmen Square, the world’s largest public square. At its northern edge stands the Tiananmen Gate, where Chairman Mao proclaimed the founding of the People’s Republic of China—a site deeply woven into the nation’s history.

Next, step into the legendary Forbidden City, a vast imperial palace complex that served as the political and ceremonial heart of China for over 500 years. Once home to 24 emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties, this UNESCO World Heritage Site boasts nearly 9,000 rooms. Wander through its grand courtyards and admire the intricate architecture—golden rooftops, white marble terraces, and vivid painted details that reflect the power and prestige of China’s imperial past.

For a change of pace, take a rickshaw ride through Beijing’s historic Hutongs—a maze of narrow alleyways lined with traditional courtyard homes. These charming neighbourhoods offer a glimpse into the city’s old-world charm, where local life unfolds in small teahouses and bustling markets.

Continue your cultural exploration at the Temple of Heaven, an architectural masterpiece where emperors once prayed for bountiful harvests. With its harmonious design and symbolic structure, this sacred complex showcases the deep spiritual traditions of ancient China.

In the evening, indulge in a Peking Roast Duck feast, a dish perfected over centuries and a true icon of Beijing’s culinary heritage. With its crispy, golden skin and succulent meat, this meal offers the perfect way to end a day immersed in the rich history and culture of China’s capital.

Day 3: Discover Mutianyu Great Wall, Ming Tombs & Olympic Venues Photo Stop

Start your day with a private tour that takes you on a scenic 70-kilometre drive to visit the Great Wall of China, specifically the Mutianyu section. Known for its stunning vistas and fewer crowds, this section offers a well-preserved glimpse into the Wall’s Ming Dynasty origins.

Upon reaching the Wall, hop on a cable car to ascend, and once at the top, embark on a hike through the most picturesque stretches. As you explore the rising watchtowers, you’ll be treated to panoramic views and fantastic photo opportunities of the Wall stretching along the rugged mountain ridges. After your hike, you have the option to descend by cable car or, if you’re up for it, walk down—a 40-minute journey. Just inform your travel consultant of your preference.

Afterwards, head to the Sacred Way, a 7-kilometre-long path that leads to the Imperial Tombs of 13 Ming Dynasty Emperors. This sacred route symbolises the emperor’s journey from Heaven to Earth. As you walk along this historic pathway, you’ll pass China’s largest archway and the Great Palace Gate, where stone guardians, including 12 mythical animals and 12 officials, stand as protectors of the tombs.

Day 4: Stroll in Summer Palace | High-speed Train to Luoyang

After checking out of your hotel and enjoying breakfast, set off on a private morning excursion to the Summer Palace, one of Beijing’s most renowned imperial gardens. This UNESCO World Heritage site exemplifies the harmony between nature and human design, offering a glimpse into the grandeur of Chinese landscaping traditions.

As you explore, you’ll come across Kunming Lake, which spans much of the park and provides scenic boat rides. Longevity Hill towers above, with its temples, pavilions, and gardens offering sweeping views of the entire area. Don’t miss the Long Corridor, a 728-metre walkway adorned with intricate paintings that tell stories from Chinese history and mythology. Be sure to visit the Hall of Benevolence and Longevity, the heart of political life during the reign of Empress Dowager Cixi.

Day 6: Explore White Horse Temple & Longmen Grottoes | High-speed Train to Xi'an

Your day kicks off with a visit to the White Horse Temple, located about 50 minutes from the centre of Luoyang. Founded in 68 AD during the Eastern Han dynasty, this temple holds the honour of being China’s first Buddhist temple, with a history stretching back more than 1,900 years.

The Longmen Grottoes, around 13 kilometres south of Luoyang, are a remarkable site of Buddhist cave temples carved into limestone cliffs. With over 2,300 caves and niches, the site is home to more than 110,000 statues of Buddha and other figures, ranging from small carvings to towering statues over 17 metres high. These caves were created over centuries, beginning in 493 CE during the Northern Wei dynasty, and offer a glimpse into the evolution of Buddhist art.

Among the standout features are the detailed sculptures and inscriptions, which shed light on the religious and cultural importance of Buddhism in ancient China. The Fengxian Temple, famous for its massive Vairocana Buddha, is one of the most impressive examples of the artistry at Longmen. These grottoes not only showcase the skill of ancient craftsmen but also provide significant historical insights into Chinese Buddhism.

After your visit to Luoyang’s cultural gems, you’ll board a high-speed train for a two-hour ride to Xi’an. Once you arrive, your Xi’an guide will be waiting to take you to your hotel, bringing your enriching day of cultural discovery to a close.
