Day 1: Arrival in Urumqi | Local Exploration

Arrive in Urumqi, where your driver will be waiting for you at the airport, holding a sign with your name. A smooth transfer takes you to your hotel in the city centre, where you can check in and get comfortable. Once you’re settled, the rest of the day is free for you to explore at your leisure. Perhaps wander through the bustling streets of Urumqi, soaking up the lively local vibe.

Day 2: Drive to Korla | Bosten Lake

After a hearty breakfast, we begin our 550-kilometre drive to Bosten Lake. Upon arrival, you’ll be welcomed by the serene beauty of the area. Spend the morning soaking in the natural beauty as you walk along the lake’s shores, where the golden sands meet the crystal-clear waters, creating a picturesque scene. Feel the warmth of the sun and the gentle breeze as you explore this peaceful oasis.

Enjoy a delightful local lunch at a nearby restaurant, offering delicious Xinjiang specialties. Relax and savour the flavours before heading out for more exploration.

In the afternoon, continue to enjoy the beauty of Bosten Lake, where the striking contrast between the vast desert and the blue lake creates a unique landscape. You may choose to take a leisurely boat ride on the lake or simply relax on the sandy shores, taking in the tranquil surroundings. This is the perfect spot to unwind and reflect on the natural wonders of the area.

After capturing the beauty of the sunset, we’ll drive to Korla for an overnight stay. Check into your hotel in Korla and relax after a day filled with stunning landscapes and peaceful moments.

Day 3: Drive to Kuqa | Tianshan Grand Canyon, Kuqa Mosque & Kuqa Palace

After breakfast, we set off for the Tianshan Grand Canyon, located about 350 km away in Kuqa County, Xinjiang, which takes approximately 4 hours by car. This stunning canyon is part of the Tianshan mountain range, and its dramatic landscape features striking red rock formations and vast, rugged terrain. As you explore the canyon, marvel at the unique geological features and the breathtaking natural beauty that surrounds you. The canyon’s mysterious charm and awe-inspiring scenery will leave you in wonder.

Following your visit to the canyon, we’ll enjoy a traditional Xinjiang lunch before continuing the day’s exploration.

After lunch, we head to Kuqa Grand Mosque, a beautiful example of Islamic architecture in the region, known for its intricate carvings and peaceful atmosphere. Next, we’ll visit Kuqa Palace (Kuqa King’s Residence), a historical site offering insight into the region’s rich cultural heritage.

In the late afternoon, we’ll make our way back to Kuqa for an overnight stay. Take the evening to unwind and reflect on the incredible sights of the day.

Day 4: Drive to Alear | Kizil Thousand Buddha Caves

After breakfast at the hotel in Kuqa, we will travel approximately 250 km (about 4 hours) to the Kizil Thousand Buddha Caves, located in Baicheng County, Xinjiang. These caves are one of China’s most famous Buddhist art treasures. Inside, you will find an impressive collection of Buddhist murals and sculptures, spanning from the 4th to the 9th centuries. As you explore the caves, you’ll be captivated by the ancient Buddhist art and the profound cultural significance it holds.

After our visit, we will enjoy lunch at a local restaurant in the area.

In the evening, we’ll continue our journey to Alear, where we will check in to our hotel and enjoy dinner at the hotel or a nearby restaurant.

Day 5: Drive to Hotan | Taklamakan Desert Highway & Hotan Night Market

After breakfast, we’ll begin our journey along the Taklamakan Desert Highway, covering a distance of approximately 450 km (around 6 hours). As we drive through this vast and captivating desert landscape, you’ll have the opportunity to admire the dramatic views of rolling sand dunes, rocky outcrops, and the shimmering horizon. This highway is known as the world’s longest road that crosses a shifting desert and passes through the heart of the Taklamakan Desert, a region crucial for oil exploration.

In the afternoon, we’ll arrive in Hotan, where you can enjoy a delicious meal at a local restaurant. After checking into your hotel, the rest of the day is free for you to relax. In the evening, head to the Hotan Night Market to experience the lively atmosphere of this bustling market, where you can sample local delicacies, shop for unique handicrafts, and soak in the vibrant cultural ambiance.

Day 6: Drive to Shache | Tuancheng Fortress, King of Walnut Trees & Shache Heritage Park

After breakfast, we will head to Tuancheng Fortress, about 320 km (around 5 hours) away. The area is known for its unique ethnic-style buildings that line the streets, offering a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of the region. As you stroll through the flat, well-maintained streets, you’ll encounter shops selling vibrant local handicrafts. Occasionally, you might spot pigeons perched on rooftops, adding a lively charm to the atmosphere. Be sure to take in the captivating sights—perhaps a door, a window, or even a particular building might catch your attention unexpectedly.

Next, we’ll visit the King of Walnuts Tree, an ancient tree that has stood since the 7th century—over 1,300 years ago. This ancient walnut tree, towering and strong, is a true testament to endurance and resilience. Its sprawling branches and sturdy trunk will give you a sense of timeless beauty.

After lunch, we will proceed to Shache, where we’ll visit the Amanishahan Mausoleum. Located in the upper reaches of the Yarkand River, this oasis was once known as the Yarkand Kingdom, a region historically second only to Kashgar in importance. At the Shache Heritage Park, we’ll gain insight into the history and culture of the Yarkand Kingdom and the region’s deep cultural roots.

In the evening, we’ll return to Urumqi for an overnight stay.

Day 7: Drive to Kashgar | Yingjisha Pottery Village

After breakfast, we will drive about 220 km (around 3 hours) to Yingjisha Pottery Village, located in Qiakezi Kuyi Village in the Kashgar region. Known for its unique mud-and-pottery decorations, the village offers a glimpse into traditional craftsmanship that has been passed down through generations. The buildings here are adorned with earthy clay finishes and pottery accents, giving the entire village a distinctive charm.

At the village, you’ll experience the “art of mud and fire” — the Uyghur pottery-making technique, a traditional skill that has earned the status of a National Intangible Cultural Heritage. Watch as skilled artisans mold the clay with their hands, shaping it into intricate designs before firing it in kilns, creating pottery that is both functional and beautiful.

In the afternoon, we will continue our journey to Kashgar, where we will spend the night.

Day 8: Drive to Taxkorgan | White Sand Lake & Karakul Lake

After breakfast, we begin our journey to Taxkorgan, a drive of about 300 km (roughly 6 hours). En route, we’ll pass by the stunning White Sand Lake, where the mountains are covered in thick, white sands, creating a desolate yet mystical atmosphere. The lake itself is crystal-clear, its water contrasting beautifully with the surrounding desert. This serene and tranquil scene offers a unique opportunity for photos and reflection.

Next, we’ll visit Karakul Lake, situated in Taxkorgan Tajik Autonomous County, Xinjiang. This high-altitude lake is surrounded by towering mountains and dense forests. The emerald green water reflects the majestic peaks, offering a breathtaking panorama. This is an ideal spot for outdoor activities such as hiking and camping, where you can immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the landscape.

In the evening, we will continue to Taxkorgan for our overnight stay.

Day 9: Drive to Kashgar | Golden Grassland Stone City & Kashgar Old City

After breakfast, we will head to Golden Grassland Stone City, approximately 420 km away (about 6 hours by car). This unique natural scenic area is known for its vast grasslands and striking stone city landscapes. The sight of rugged stones scattered across the expansive grassy fields creates a desolate yet enchanting ambiance. As you explore, you’ll be mesmerised by the distinct natural beauty and cultural features, giving you a sense of both isolation and wonder.

Upon arrival in Kashgar, we will visit the Kashgar Old City, a national 5A-level scenic area and one of China’s famous historical and cultural cities. Within the old city, you’ll find a wealth of preserved traditional architecture, including homes, shops, and mosques. The atmosphere is rich in Uyghur culture, where you can experience vibrant local life, sample authentic cuisine, and enjoy traditional folk performances.

Day 10: Kashgar | Fragrant Concubine Garden (Xiāngfēi Yuán) & Id Kah Mosque

After breakfast, head to Xiangfei Garden, just 20 km (about 0.5 hours by car) from Kashgar. This peaceful spot honours Xiangfei, the famous Uyghur woman from the Qing Dynasty. The garden’s architecture blends Uyghur and Han styles, offering a beautiful mix of cultural influences. Stroll through the lush paths, and discover the fascinating history of Xiangfei and the deep roots of Uyghur culture.

In the afternoon, explore Id Kah Mosque, one of China’s most iconic mosques. This grand structure, with its towering minarets and intricate design, showcases the beauty of Islamic architecture.
