Itinerary
This walking half-day tour takes you through the hidden alleys of Xi’an – Xi’an Muslim Quarter, with some stops using tuktuks. Explore less touristy spots and discover the city’s authentic flavours.
Enjoy hands-on experiences as you watch chefs grill meat over open flames and make dumplings. You’ll even get to prepare your own “Pita Bread Soaked in Lamb Soup” (Yangrou Pao Mo), and hear the distinctive sound of Biangbiang noodles being pulled.
Biangbiang Noodles: Watch as skilled chefs stretch thick, hand-pulled noodles with a satisfying, distinctive sound, creating the perfect chewy texture. These noodles are then drenched in spicy chili oil and topped with savoury ingredients. Each bite provides a genuine taste of Xi’an’s rich culinary heritage.
Yangrou Paomo: It consists of crumbled pita bread soaked in a rich, flavorful mutton soup, with tender pieces of lamb swimming in the broth. As you tear the warm, soft bread and dip it into the savoury soup, the comforting aroma fills the air, creating an authentic, hands-on experience of Xi’an’s culinary heritage.
Liangpi: Liangpi is a refreshing Xi’an street food that will awaken your senses. As you twirl the cold, chewy noodles, the tangy sauce of garlic, vinegar, and chili oil bursts with flavour. The cool, crisp texture of the noodles paired with fresh vegetables and tender meat creates an unforgettable, authentic taste of Xi’an.
Roujiamo: Referred to as a Chinese hamburger, is a delicious street food that offers a taste of Xi’an’s local flavour. Warm, freshly baked flatbread is filled with tender, slow-cooked lamb or pork, seasoned with a mix of spices. As you take a bite, the rich, savoury meat and soft, slightly crispy bread create a perfect balance of textures and flavours.
Yes, the Muslim Quarter is safe for tourists. It's a popular area with plenty of foot traffic, and locals are welcoming. As always, it's good to stay aware of your belongings.
Most street food vendors and small shops in the Muslim Quarter prefer cash. It’s a good idea to carry Chinese yuan (RMB) in cash. Larger stores may accept credit cards, but it’s always safer to have cash on hand.
