Where to Stay in Chengdu
By Annie
Having explored this vibrant city many times, from solo trips to family adventures, I’ve gathered practical tips and local insights to help you make the most of your Chengdu journey. Whether you’re here for the adorable pandas, the fiery Sichuan cuisine, or the city’s unique blend of tradition and modernity, choosing the right area for your accommodation can truly make or break your experience.
Stay Near Chunxi Road & Taikoo Li: The Heart of Modern Chengdu
If you love being in the thick of things, with endless shopping, dining, and vibrant city life at your fingertips, Chunxi Road and Taikoo Li are your go-to. This bustling commercial hub is right in the city center, considered the most convenient and central. It’s a bustling commercial hub with luxury brands, local vendors, and a lively atmosphere.

Why Stay Here?
- Vibrant Atmosphere: Chunxi Road is Chengdu’s iconic shopping street, lined with high-end malls, boutique stores, and street food stalls. Taikoo Li, on the other hand, is a trendy area with a mix of modern architecture and traditional Sichuan elements. It’s perfect for those who want to experience the city’s energy while staying close to all the action.
- Excellent Connectivity: It’s super connected via the Metro Line 2 and 3. This excellent metro access makes it incredibly dynamic, connecting you easily to other parts of the city, including the Giant Panda Base (about 30-40 minutes by metro or taxi).
- Endless Options: You’ll find a wide variety of dining options, from hot-pot stalls at midnight to international boutiques by day.
Kuanzhai Alleys Area(Wide and Narrow Alleys)
For those seeking a more relaxed, artistic atmosphere that still offers convenient access to attractions, the Kuanzhai Alleys are a fantastic choice. This area blends historical charm with modern flair, featuring traditional-style buildings housing trendy bars, tea houses, and boutique shops. It’s one of Chengdu’s major historical and cultural preservation zones.

Why Stay Here?
- Cultural Immersion: The Wide and Narrow Alleys offer a glimpse into old Chengdu. You can spend your mornings sipping tea at a local café, exploring the museums, or enjoying a leisurely stroll through the alleys. Evenings bring Sichuan opera face-changing shows and craft-beer bars.
- Authentic Vibe: It feels more local and less touristy than Chunxi Road, blending historical charm with modern flair.
Jinli Ancient Street & Wuhou Temple Area
Jinli Street, adjacent to the Wuhou Temple, is a pedestrian zone mimicking ancient Sichuan streets. It’s packed with lantern-lit shops, snack vendors, and performances, making it a hotspot for evening strolls. This area is in the southern part of central Chengdu.
This area wraps the Wuhou Temple complex and the lantern-lit Jinli snack street. It’s the visual China many visitors imagine: red walls, shadow-play stalls, and incense drifting at dawn.

Wenshu Monastery Area: Great for a Peaceful, Spiritual Escape
North of the Chengdu city center, the Wenshu Monastery area offers a serene contrast. Centered around the largest Buddhist temple in Chengdu, it’s filled with incense shops, vegetarian restaurants, and quiet gardens. If you’re looking for a quieter and more peaceful area, this is an excellent choice.
The monastery itself is a beautiful spot for reflection, and the surrounding streets are filled with charming tea houses and local eateries. It offers a chance to observe daily life in Chengdu.

South Side of Chengdu (High-Tech Zone & Financial City)
If convenience to Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport is key (especially for short stays), consider the south side, like around the High-Tech Zone. It’s modern with business districts, parks, and malls. Farther south, beyond the 3rd Ring Road, glass towers surround Century City station.
It’s well-connected by Metro Line 1 and highways, with quick airport transfers (15-25 minutes). This is ideal for those with early or late flights.
Chengdu Panda Base & Northern Suburbs
Staying near the research base lets you arrive at 7:30 a.m. when pandas are most active. While there are only a few hotels here, it offers unparalleled access to these beloved creatures.
Early Panda Access: You can be among the first to see the pandas when they are most playful and active in the early morning.
