Zhangjiajie National Forest Park-The Avatar Mountains of China
By Annie
I’ve been Zhangjiajie National Forest Park more than once, and each visit feels like stepping into a movie scene. If you’ve seen Avatar, the floating “Hallelujah Mountains” were inspired by the towering sandstone pillars of Zhangjiajie. But trust me, no movie or photo can match the real thing.
When to Visit Zhangjiajie National Forest Park
Choosing the right time to visit can significantly impact your experience. Based on my numerous trips, the best times to visit Zhangjiajie are during spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November).
Zhangjiajie in Spring (March to May)
During spring, you’ll find comfortable temperatures, blooming flora, and often, a mystical atmosphere with morning mist enveloping the peaks. Be prepared for some rain, especially in April, as it’s part of the rainy season, but this can also enhance the misty, ethereal views, making the landscape feel even more ethereal.

Zhangjiajie in Autumn (September to November)
The weather is generally cool and dry in Zhangjiajie in autumn, offering excellent visibility and vibrant fall foliage, especially in October. It’s perfect for hiking and getting those unobstructed panoramic shots.
My advice: Go in late September for fewer people and clearer skies. If you’re there in November, pack layers—the weather can dip to 10°C, but it’s still pleasant for hiking.

Times to Avoid for Visiting Zhangjiajie National Forest Park
I strongly advise against visiting during major Chinese national holidays, such as Labor Day (early May) and National Day (first week of October). During these periods, the park becomes incredibly crowded, and transport, accommodation, and attractions will be packed, leading to long queues and higher prices. July and August are also peak tourist seasons due to summer vacations, making them quite busy, hot, and humid with frequent thunderstorms.
Must-See Areas within the Park: My Top Recommendations
Yuanjiajie: The Avatar Mountains
This is where you’ll find the famous “Avatar Mountains” (Southern Sky Pillar, also known as Avatar Hallelujah Mountain). It’s incredibly scenic, but also very popular. Try to visit early in the morning (park opens at 7 AM) to beat the crowds. It’s about 2-3 hours of walking with stunning views, including the First Bridge Under Heaven.
Take the Bailong Elevator, the world’s highest outdoor elevator, to reach the top quickly and enjoy panoramic views.

Tianzi Mountain: Peaks and Panoramas
Known for its “peak forest landscape,” with thousands of peaks rising sharply from the ground. The Tianzi Mountain cable car offers spectacular views. After exploring, you can descend via the Ten-Mile Gallery trail or bus. The views from the top are a sight to behold, showcasing the scale of this natural wonder.

Golden Whip Stream: A Gentle Trek
A more relaxed, pleasant hike along a stream, offering ground-level views of the sandstone pillars and chances to spot wild monkeys. It’s about a 7.5 km path that takes about 2-3 hours and ends near the South Gate. It’s less crowded and perfect for photos, offering a different perspective of the park’s beauty. Even if weather ruins other views, Golden Whip still looks moody and captivating in the rain.

Where to Stay for Visiting Zhangjiajie National Forest Park?
For the most convenient experience, I strongly recommend staying in Wulingyuan Town. It’s right next to the main entrance of Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, so you’ll save time on transportation and can easily get into the park early—before the crowds arrive.
The town has a good range of accommodations, from local guesthouses to boutique stays and comfortable international-style hotels. Many places also offer helpful services like luggage storage, simple breakfast, and park ticket assistance.
What to Pack for a Zhangjiajie Trip?
- Comfortable hiking shoes: You’ll be doing a lot of walking, often on uneven terrain and many steps. The paths are paved but can be wet. I learned the hard way that sneakers just don’t cut it!
- Light rain jacket: Weather can change quickly in the mountains. A waterproof jacket is a good idea, especially during the rainy season. Umbrellas are often useless on narrow, windy paths.
- Passport: Required for park entry, hotel check-ins, and all transport tickets in China.
- Alipay or WeChat Pay: Few vendors take cash now. These mobile payment apps are essential for transactions.
