Where to Stay in Xian: Accommodation Areas

When planning your Xian travel, one of the first questions you might ask is: Where should I stay?
I have explored Xian’s neighborhoods in depth, I can tell you that where you choose to base yourself can really shape your experience. Each part of the city offers a different atmosphere, level of convenience, and cultural flavor.
Here’s my personal guide to the best Xian accommodation areas — based on location, transport, and what you want to see and do.
Bell Tower & Drum Tower Area: The Most Central Location
For first-time visitors to Xian, or anyone who wants to be in the thick of the action, the City Center, particularly around the Bell and Drum Towers, is, in my opinion, the absolute best place to stay.
Why the City Center in Xian is an Ideal Base:
- Central Hub: The Bell Tower is literally at Xian’s geographical center, acting as a major transportation nexus.
- Proximity to Xian Attractions: You’re within walking distance of iconic sights like the Bell Tower, Drum Tower, and the bustling Muslim Quarter. The Great Mosque of Xian is also in this vicinity.
- Excellent Connectivity: Metro Line 2 passes through this area, offering easy access to other parts of the city. You can reach the Terracotta Warriors with relative ease, though it’s about a 1 hour journey by metro and bus. Getting to the airport takes around 50 minutes via public transport.
- Dining and Shopping: The Muslim Quarter, famous for its incredible street food, is right here. You’ll find a plethora of restaurants and shopping options, from traditional markets to modern malls. The area is lively, with a mix of historical charm and modern energy.
If you’re a light sleeper, be aware that some areas can be lively into the night. For those looking for a comprehensive Xian travel experience, this is your prime choice.
Big Wild Goose Pagoda Area: Cultural & Family-Friendly
Moving slightly south of the city center, the area around the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda, located within the Yanta District, offers a different, yet equally appealing, vibe. This district is known for its historical and cultural attractions, as well as its educational institutions.
Why the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda Area Appeals:
- Cultural Significance: Home to the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda and the Shaanxi History Museum, two must-see attractions.
- Green Spaces: This area blends historical relics with more modern developments and green spaces, including universities. It has a peaceful vibe, with plenty of green spaces and traditional architecture.
- Transportation: While not as central as the Bell Tower area, it’s well-connected by metro, making it easy to reach the city center and other attractions.
- Atmosphere: Generally considered a bit more relaxed than the immediate city center, especially in the evenings around the pagodas where light shows and cultural performances often take place.
I find this area especially good for families, as there’s plenty of open space for kids to run around, plus easy access to parks and quieter streets compared to the busy city center.
South Gate Area – Historic Charm of Xian City Wall
The South Gate (Yongning Gate) area is ideal if you love Xian’s ancient history and architecture. It’s right by one of the most beautiful sections of the Xian City Wall, where you can walk or cycle along the top for panoramic views.
When I stayed here, I enjoyed starting my mornings with a quiet stroll along the wall before the crowds arrived. The South Gate is also near several traditional neighborhoods with charming alleyways, tea houses, and local eateries. Transport is convenient too, with metro access and a short taxi ride to the Bell Tower area.
If you’re looking for a slightly calmer base than the Bell Tower district but still want to be central, the South Gate area is a great choice.
Lintong District: For Terracotta Army Focused Travelers
If your primary goal is to visit the Terracotta Army and you want to minimize travel time to this world-renowned site, staying in Lintong District is an option. Lintong is where the Terracotta Warriors are located. Huaqing Pool, with its ancient Tang-era palace and natural hot springs, is also nearby.
While convenient for the Warriors, accommodation choices are fewer, and transportation back to downtown Xian for other sights can be less frequent, especially in the evening.
Qujiang New District: Modern & Scenic
For a contemporary twist on Xian travel, Qujiang New District in the southeast is emerging as a hotspot. This area is known for its modern infrastructure and business focus. It’s packed with theme parks, malls, and the Qujiang International Conference Center. In my view, this is best for business travelers or those seeking upscale Xian accommodation without the old-town chaos.
Cons: It feels less “authentic” than historic areas—more high-rises than hutongs.
