Hello fellow explorers! I’m Martina, your China travel expert. Having journeyed between Chengdu and Chongqing countless times, I know how to make your trip to Chengdu and Chongqing smooth and unforgettable. With the right tips, connecting them is effortless, creating a perfect blend of culture, scenery, and flavor in one journey.

The Distance Between Chengdu and Chongqing

These two southwestern cities—just 265 to 426 km apart—offer contrasting charms: Chengdu’s serene tea houses and giant pandas versus Chongqing’s dazzling skyline, riverside drama, and spicy hotpot.

1. Best Travel Choice between Chengdu and Chongqing: By High-Speed Train

From my extensive experience and the unanimous consensus among seasoned travelers, the high-speed train is, without a doubt, the superior method for traveling between Chengdu and Chongqing. It offers an unparalleled combination of speed, comfort, and value that other options simply cannot match.

Why High-Speed Train from Chengdu to Chongqing is a Top Pick?

Unmatched Speed and Punctuality

The journey typically spans a mere 1 to 2.5 hours. This incredible efficiency means you spend less time in transit and more time exploring. With over 100 daily departures, from early morning to late evening, finding a train that fits your schedule is incredibly easy. These G-series (high-speed), D-series (bullet), and C-series trains operate with remarkable punctuality, a crucial factor for tight itineraries.

Cost-Effectiveness and Comfort

First-class and business-class options are available for those seeking additional space and amenities, perfect for unwinding or even catching up on work. This is an exceptional price given the speed and comfort provided. The trains are modern, clean, and equipped with power outlets, making for a pleasant journey.

Strategic Station Connectivity

Most high-speed trains depart from Chengdu East Railway Station and arrive at Chongqing North Railway Station or Chongqing West Railway Station. For the most convenient access to Chongqing’s downtown area, including popular spots like Jiefangbei and Hongyadong, I strongly recommend aiming for Chongqing North Railway Station, as it offers direct metro connections. Chengdu East is also well-connected to the city center via metro lines 2 and 7.

Booking Your High-Speed Train Tickets Between Chengdu and Chongqing

To ensure a smooth booking process, I advise using the official “Railway 12306” app or website. This allows you to avoid additional booking fees from third-party platforms. It’s wise to book your tickets at least 3-5 days in advance, especially if you’re traveling during peak seasons or holidays, as seats can sell out quickly. You will need their passport for purchase and may need to verify their ID at a station counter for their first booking.

2. Long-Distance Buses: The Budget Choice (with caveats)

Buses offer a more budget-friendly alternative, with journeys taking around 4 hours and the cost difference is not particularly large.

They typically depart from Chengdu East Bus Station or Chengdu South Bus Station. While cheaper, buses are less comfortable than trains and can be significantly slower due to traffic, making them a less efficient option if time is a concern.

3. Private Cars/Taxis: For Specific Needs

Hiring a private car or taxi provides door-to-door convenience and flexibility, particularly for groups or those desiring stops along the way. The drive takes approximately 4 hours and costs upwards. This option is considerably more expensive than the train and the travel time is comparable to the bus, making it suitable only for very specific preferences or if you plan to visit attractions like the Dazu Rock Carvings en route.

4. Flights: Generally Not Recommended

While flights technically exist, they are rarely a practical choice for this route. The air travel time is about 1 hour, but when you factor in travel to and from airports, security checks, and boarding, the total door-to-door time often exceeds that of the high-speed train. Flights also tend to be significantly more expensive. Unless you’re making an international connection from Chongqing, I strongly advise against flying for this short domestic hop.

Plan to travel from Chengdu to Chongqing is a highlight of any Sichuan adventure, offering a fascinating contrast between two of China’s most captivating cities. By prioritizing the high-speed train, you ensure a journey that is not only fast and comfortable but also highly cost-effective, allowing you more time and energy to immerse yourself in the unique cultures of both destinations. Follow these expert tips, and you’re set for a truly memorable experience.
