Best Time to Visit Beijing
The best time to visit Beijing is during the spring (April to May) and autumn (September to October) months.
Beijing experiences distinct seasonal changes. Summers can be hot and humid, with temperatures soaring above 30℃, making outdoor activities feel exhausting, especially in the city. Winter brings the cold, with temperatures dipping to -10℃, but the crisp air and clear skies make it a great time for sightseeing. Autumn, however, is a standout-offering cool temperatures and stunning fall colors at spots like Summer Palace and the Great Wall. Spring brings pleasant warmth and a burst of color, with flowers blooming throughout the city. For those who prefer a quieter experience and more moderate weather, visiting Beijing during these seasons is an excellent option.
It’s worth noting that Beijing has a lot of tourists no matter what time of year you visit, especially during major festivals.
Beijing Travel Tips for Each Season

March – May
Spring brings mild weather to Beijing, with temperatures ranging from 10°C to 22°C (50°F–72°F). It’s a perfect time to explore the Summer Palace, walk through blooming gardens at the Temple of Heaven, or hike a less-crowded section of the Great Wall, such as Mutianyu. Parks like Yuyuantan burst with cherry blossoms, ideal for scenic photos.
Beijing hosts several spring flower festivals in places like Beijing Botanical Garden and Yuyuantan Park during April and May.

June – August
Summer in Beijing is hot and humid, with temperatures often above 30°C (86°F). Visit major landmarks like the Forbidden City or Lama Temple early in the morning or explore the shaded paths of the Summer Palace. In the evening, enjoy a relaxing stroll at Houhai or the Olympic Park area.
The city comes alive with evening light shows, outdoor concerts, and seasonal exhibitions at venues like the National Centre for the Performing Arts and 798 Art District.

September – November
Autumn is one of the best times to visit Beijing, with clear skies and temperatures between 15°C–25°C (59°F–77°F). Don’t miss the golden leaves at Fragrant Hills, or the scenic beauty of the Great Wall at Badaling or Jinshanling. The Temple of Heaven and Beihai Park also offer peaceful autumn walks.
In early October, Beijing celebrates China’s National Day with large-scale decorations, flag-raising ceremonies at Tiananmen Square, and extended opening hours for key attractions.

December – February
Beijing winters are cold and dry, often below freezing. Despite the chill, this is a quiet and atmospheric time to visit the Forbidden City, Summer Palace, and tranquil hutong neighborhoods dusted in snow. For a unique winter experience, go ice skating on Houhai Lake or visit quieter Great Wall sections like Simatai.
During Chinese New Year (January or February), you can experience temple fairs at places like Ditan Park, featuring cultural performances, local snacks, and traditional folk art.
